Haiti Trip Update Letter

Wednesday, September 01, 2010

It is hard to believe but summer has come to an end for the Best Family. School does not officially start until September 7th but we have already been busy with marching band and cheerleading for the girls. The highlight for our family this summer was time spent at Houghton Lake and a day in the Upper Peninsula. This year Emily will be in 10th grade, Samantha will be in 7th grade, and Josiah will be in 5th grade.

A lot has been happening as I and the rest of the team from Life Church have been making preparations for our departure in October. I am very happy to share that our local power company, Detroit Edison, made a donation of 36 solar panels that we plan to install at Ebenezer Glenn so that they will have a reliable source of electricity for the school and orphanage. Please pray with us that the solar panels will arrive in Haiti prior to when we arrive.

There are 8 people who will be part of this trip to Dessalines, Haiti in October. We each have an area of focus as we are there for the week. My focus will be on providing pastoral care for the team and providing  muscle power for the solar panel installation. We have one lady that will be teaching a Christian abstinence class to Haitian teens, another lady will be working with some children at the orphanage that have emotional impairment, two other men will be the  “brains” for the solar panel installation, and two teens on the trip will be doing sports and puppet ministry.

We have a couple special dates coming up for our team that I wanted to make you aware of so that you can join with us in prayer. September 19th, will be a special Haiti emphasis Sunday at Life Church. Our church family will be having special time of prayer for our trip and a special offering will be taken. The second date is October 2. We will be having a special family movie night at Life Church to help raise funds for the trip plus we are also collecting supplies to take with us in our luggage.

Here are some areas where we would appreciate your prayers for our team:

  • Protection for the team and their family members. Everyone in our team meetings has expressed the fact that they feel increased tension from spiritual warfare.
  • Safe arrival of solar panels in Dessalines before we arrive in October.
  • Ability for team members to learn some rudimentary Creole for our time in Haiti.
  • That there would be enough donated materials and supplies so that we will be able to fill 16 50LB suitcases.
  • Physical protection for our time in Haiti.
  • Financial provision for team members and the materials and supplies that need to be shipped.
  • God would open the doors for a ongoing long term partnership with the orphanage, school and local church in Dessalines

Thank you so much for taking the time to read this and support me and my team in prayer. I also want to thank again those who have made financial contributions as well. God is going to do amazing things on this trip and each have you are playing a vital and crucial role.

Seeking to serve Him,

If you would like to financially support our trip, please send your (tax-deductible) gift to: Ebenezer Glenn Orphanage. Their (U.S.A.) office address is: 3572 Quebec Trail, Wayland, MI  49348. Please write Jim Best on an attached note. Thank you so much!  (www.EbenezerGlennOrphanage.org)

Haiti Trip Information

Jims Final Edit 3.0

Below is a copy of my first prayer letter for friends and family.

I wanted to write and tell you about an exciting opportunity I have to go on a special trip to Haiti this November. I am going to be part of a 10 person team from Life Church in Canton, MI that is going to do a week of special projects at Ebenezer Glen Orphanage in Dessalines, Haiti.

As you know, this past January the small country of Haiti was ravaged by a series of earthquakes that absolutely devastated this struggling country. Things were not very good in the country before the quakes but now it is absolutely catastrophic. Many things that we take for granted everyday are not available in Haiti and it will take years to rebuild their infrastructure.

Thirty seven years ago, Don & Doris Peavey answered God’s call to missions. As they made themselves available, He opened the door for them along with their four children to move to Dessalines, Haiti, where they began the Ebenezer Glenn Orphanage. God has provided just as He promised so many years ago. With the Lord’s help, they have been able to train and build lives to further the kingdom of God. The Peaveys have enjoyed watching the children grow physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually into adulthood. Many have the ability to sing, play musical instruments and conduct gospel services.  Graduates of EGO include nurses, accountants, computer operators, teachers and worship leaders.

Today at EGO there are 12 buildings including the Clinic, which daily serves the community, and the Tabernacle that is used as the worship center for the ministry. The Tabernacle also serves as an activity center for the community, which helps to establish good relations with the people while providing a place for weddings, receptions, rallies and banquets. It also offers a portable library which encourages Christian reading and other activities to expand their knowledge of the Word of God

I am hoping to enlist your prayer support as the rest of my team I and start to make preparations to go on this important trip. The tentative date for the trip is November2010. I will send out more detailed information as it is available.

Some things that you can begin to pray for are as follows:

Physical, emotional, and spiritual protection.

Ability to bond with fellow team members.

Willingness to let my heart be broken with what I encounter in Haiti.

Financial provision for trip.

Ability to impact other people when I return.

Rebuilding efforts in country of Haiti.

Team Leaders: Chris and Beth Cooley

Thanks in advance for your partnership and support of this mission opportunity,

Jim

Summer Mission Plans

I have not had a chance to officially post this yet, but we recently found out that we will for sure not be able to go on our family mission trip to Haiti this July. The country has been completely turned upside down by the massive earthquake this past January. The need right now in Haiti is for skilled relief work and we are not capable in  helping out in that way. We hope to reschedule our trip in the future but that could be as much as a few years from now.

Now that we are unable to got to Haiti we our going to try to visit an organization called Frontera de Cristo that operates on the US/Mexican border in Douglas, Arizona. They helped start a business for Mexican Nationals to grow and roast coffee and sell it to individuals and churches in the USA. The business is called Café Justo. Our family has been buying the coffee and they ship direct to our house. In addition to the coffee business they have other main ministries.

Frontera de Cristo seeks to put flesh on the good news of Jesus Christ through six areas of ministry: Church Development, Health Ministry, Family Ministry, the New Hope Community Center, Mission Education and the Just Trade Center.

We will keep you posted as to what develops with this Arizona/Mexico trip.

As always your would be appreciated as we plan and prepare for this family trip in July.

help in praying for Haiti

via Godspace by Christine Sine on 1/19/10

Once again Haiti is uppermost in our thoughts and prayers. Around the world people continue to respond pouring out resources, prayers and love to this suffering nation.   World Concern one of our local relief and development agencies that is involved in Haiti is running a fundraiser on PRAISE 106.5 radio today.

Sometimes we do not have the words within ourselves to know how to lift needs like this to God.  If you are still not sure how to pray watch  this poignant and sobering video produced by Work of the People to help focus our prayers.

Or you might like to recite these prayers I wrote this morning as I was praying for Haiti.  They helped me to focus my prayers and move closer to God.  I find that the words keep revolving in my mind as I listen to the news and watch the images still flowing out of Haiti

Merciful God

Compassionate Christ

Transforming Spirit

Have mercy on all those who suffer

Protect the weak and the vulnerable

Provide for the homeless and the destitute

Comfort the grieving and the dying

Have mercy on all who are helping

God who loves

Christ who cares

Spirit who comforts

Grant peace to the people of Haiti.

—————————————————————-

God grieve with us

Christ grieve in us

Spirit grieve through us

Embrace and comfort all who suffer

God care with us

Christ care in us

Spirit care through us

Heal and renew through our hearts and hands

God love with us

Christ love in us

Spirit love through us

Transform death into eternal life

Help Cancel Hatian Debt

Dear ONE Member,

In the last few days, I have learned that most of my family members in Haiti, though homeless, are alive. Even as we grieve for those we lost, we are thankful for the safety of other loved ones, and for the incredible outpouring of concern and assistance coming from all over the world.

Since this disaster occurred last Tuesday, I have wanted nothing more than to go to Haiti to help, hold and comfort my family and other survivors. Knowing I can’t do that now, I am putting all my energies into helping Haiti rebuild its country without the burden of debt. Together, we can convince global creditors to cancel Haiti’s $1 billion international debt.

Please click here to sign ONE’s petition calling for cancellation of Haiti’s debts:

http://www.one.org/us/actnow/drophaitiandebt/o.pl?id=1405-3697601-_sQk5Hx&t=2

As Haiti rebuilds from this disaster, please work to secure the immediate cancellation of Haiti’s $1 billion debt and ensure that any emergency earthquake assistance is provided in the form of grants, not debt-incurring loans.

Haiti needs a sustained international effort as it seeks to recover from this earthquake. Beyond the current emergency response, we’ll need to ensure that money saved from debt relief is invested in long-term development, and that assistance to Haiti isn’t given in the form of new loans that would exacerbate the debt problem.

But here and now, there is a very clear goal: let’s get rid of this crippling debt.

Thank you,

Keren Dongo

Childrens Hope Chest

Haiti’s devastating earthquake may triple the number of orphans living on this small impoverished island. Already one of the poorest nations in the Western Hemisphere, Haiti’s new orphan crisis will bring incredible strain upon the country’s resources to care for children.

Our ministry team has developed a two-stage plan to assist organizations in caring for an expected 300% increase in orphaned children in Haiti.

EMERGENCY FOOD RELIEF
Through our “5 for 50” program, we have already contributed $3,000 to Kids Against Hunger. In 2009, they shipped over 500,000 meals to our carepoints in Africa. From Jan 1 – Feb 28, HopeChest will donate 100% of all 5 for 50 contributions to Kids Against Hunger to feed Haiti’s orphans. To join us, please go to http://www.5for50.org to make a gift. 100% of all contributions made before Feb 28 will support emergency food relief for orphans in Haiti.

LONG-TERM CARE
Organizations are rushing into Haiti–just as we watched them pour into the former Soviet Union in the early 1990s. Today, less than 10 percent are still ministering in Russia. Right now, HopeChest is conducting extensive due diligence on several orphan ministry partners in Haiti. Our COO, Bob Mudd, has been on the phone every day with new potential long-term partners.

We are looking for ministries with a pre-earthquake track record of caring for orphans, and who will experience a substantial increase in the number of children they are serving. Through a ministry partnership with Children’s HopeChest, we will explore providing long-term care through our CONNECT COMMUNITIES outreach, as well as our TRANSFORM church sponsorship programs.

Above all, please pray for everyone affected by the earthquake, especially David Hames and his family. David attends Vanguard Church, one of our Swaziland carepoint sponsors. David was in Haiti to film stories of children for Compassion International and was in the Hotel Montana when it collapsed during the earthquake. Search and rescue teams are working to locate David, and we ask you to join us in asking for God’s miraculous hand to work in Haiti today.

Thank you for your support and prayers.

Sincerely,

The HopeChest Ministry Team

P.S. If you haven’t contributed to disaster relief in Haiti, we would encourage you make a financial contribution to one of the following organizations:

- The Red Cross
- Compassion International
- Samaritan’s Purse
