Today was a nice quiet day at work because there were no students and staff at school. OLGC School was canceled today because many of the students use the Plymouth Canton School District buses to get to and from school. So because Plymouth Canton was canceled today because of Swine Flu precautions my school was canceled as well. I was able to catch up on some detail work and did some of the first work of the season outside mowing and trimming the grounds.
Tomorrow I am taking the day off work because Emily has a 1/2 day of school and we are going out for lunch for Cinco de Mayo.
Last week I asked the secretaries at OLGC to get me a BIG FAT Magic Marker because I needed to write “OLGC” on some new curbside recycling containers. I told them I thought it was called a “Magnum 44″. They laughed and said they would look into it for me. Well today at work this is what they had for me.
I did four identical presentations about my work at OLGC on Monday for the 3-5 graders at Schweitzer Elementary School. It was part of their career day for Life Skills Class. Things went pretty well. Some groups asked lots of questions and other groups were like pulling teeth to get them to interact. Below is a picture of me while I was there that Sam took and I am also posting a link to my power point and video presentation. The video is funny to watch. I recorded it in one take with no editing. At times it comes across very wooden because I am trying think in my head what I want to say on the video before I say it. Anyway the kids liked it!
This whole next week of work will be a bit laid back for me because the teachers and students will be gone for the week because it is mid-winter break. So I will be working but I will not have to deal with some of my usual time sensitive responsibilities like setting up and taking down the lunch room. I also will we worked a different schedule as well. Monday will be a whole day off because I am going to be doing a carrier day presentation at Schweitzer and then for the rest of the week I am working 8:30-2:30 instead of my normal 5-1.
This week is Catholic Schools Week. At OLGC where I work they have had all sorts of activities planned to celebrate the week. Today was special guests at lunch day. I had lunch with a class of 1st graders. It was fun to ask them questions and here there silly answers.
Today Syndie is going to try and see if see can go back to work. This will be the first day since last Tuesday when she injured her back while she was doing her morning exercises. She has been laying flat of her back with an ice pack for most of the time she has been hurt. She has another chiropractor appointment at noon today and hopefully that will help her make it through her first full day.
This last weekend was very busy for me. I worked a 10 hour day on Friday and an additional 7 hours on Saturday. This week is Catholic Schools week and there was a big open house on Sunday and we had to have everything looking very nice for potential new families. It was a ton of work but the school principle said everything looked fantastic so it was all worthwhile. Plus I will have a pile of OT on my next paycheck.
Saturday we had a short visit with my mother-in-law Sherrill, my brother-in-law Ben, and his son Jack. They came to do some shopping and pick up some furniture that they had previously purchased and were storing in our garage. Emily and Samantha were excited to baby sit their cousin for a few hours while Ben and Mom did were out shopping.
Sunday afternoon the kids and I went to the library and watched the movie Open Season II. It was cute and funny, a great indoor activity for a cold winter day. My favorite character is gruff Scottish squirrel, "McSquiggy" We also played a game of Yahtzee before going to bed which a new experience for me and the kids. I also leaned how to cook Irish Steel Cut Oats on the stove. So now I can make oats for breakfast which I did this morning. This afternoon I am going to drive over to Ann Arbor and have a long overdue coffee with Doug Hovey. This will be the first time I will be able to drive on the highways my old car had trouble maintaining highway speeds.
One of the great things about my job is my Holiday schedule. After clocking out today I do not have to report back to work until January 5th 2009! I have been really looking forward to this extended time off especially with all the early snow this year. I really am looking forward to spending time with family and doing some traveling. More details on Christmas Day!
I also am going to be getting a new (new to me) car over the break as well. My Grandma Best has decided not to renew her drivers license and I am going to buy her 1993 Chevy Lumina car. It has been well taken care of and only been driven to the grocery store and church. Josiah and I will be taking the Amtrak Train down to Illinois on January third to pick it up and drive it to Michigan. I am also happy because I was able to sell my ’88 Toyota for a quick sale on Craig’s List to help defray the cost of the Lumina.
Tomorrow will be a chill at home day with family and Thursday we will going to Canada to celebrate Christmas with Syndie’s Family.
