Today I picked up my prescription for my Malaria prevention medicine and all I have left is a Hepatitis A shot and I will be all set to go on my trip to Haiti in October. This Sunday my team is taking a road trip to Lansing to visit a Haitian Church that meets their. On September 19th we will be doing a presentation in all three services at Life Church and on October 2 we are doing a movie fundraiser. Things are really getting exciting!!

Last weekend we were able to go away for an adult only weekend to Hale, MI with our good friends, Doug and Heather Hovey.
It was a very relaxing time to hang out around the bonfire, take uninterrupted naps, visit East Tawas, see the springs, and go canoeing on the Au Sable River.
Big Thanks … to Mom and Dad Kivell and Chris and Laura Garvey for looking after our kids so we could go away. We had a wonderful time!!

Our family had a great vacation this past week. We spent the week at Houghton Lake at a cabin owned by my boss at OLGC. We enjoyed the beach at the lake and some local attractions like mini golf and go carts. We also took one day and traveled up to the Upper Peninsula of Mi so that we could see Tahquamemon Falls and White Fish Point on Lake Superior.

I have not had a chance to officially post this yet, but we recently found out that we will for sure not be able to go on our family mission trip to Haiti this July. The country has been completely turned upside down by the massive earthquake this past January. The need right now in Haiti is for skilled relief work and we are not capable in helping out in that way. We hope to reschedule our trip in the future but that could be as much as a few years from now.
Now that we are unable to got to Haiti we our going to try to visit an organization called Frontera de Cristo that operates on the US/Mexican border in Douglas, Arizona. They helped start a business for Mexican Nationals to grow and roast coffee and sell it to individuals and churches in the USA. The business is called Café Justo. Our family has been buying the coffee and they ship direct to our house. In addition to the coffee business they have other main ministries.
Frontera de Cristo seeks to put flesh on the good news of Jesus Christ through six areas of ministry: Church Development, Health Ministry, Family Ministry, the New Hope Community Center, Mission Education and the Just Trade Center.
We will keep you posted as to what develops with this Arizona/Mexico trip.
As always your would be appreciated as we plan and prepare for this family trip in July.

This afternoon we made our annual Fall family trip to Spicer’s Orchard in Fenton. We had a perfect day to be outside enjoying the Fall beauty! Everything was great except for the ride their! There was MAGOR traffic on I-96 West, like to the point of a complete standstill. So we did some fancy maneuvering to cross the median and get off the highway and onto Grand River Drive and take it around to avoid all the traffic. It was definitely the scenic route but at least we were moving. Below are some pictorial highlights.

This weekend we were up in the MI Thumb area for the wedding of Joel and Brenda Clark. Joel is the bother of our best friends Doug and Heather Hovey. It was fun for the whole family to be at a wedding together and hang out with the extended Clark Family. Also it is important to tell you the wedding was on an airport runway because the groom is a pilot. Very cool and different for a wedding.

Yesterday, Syndie and I had a nice day in downtown Detroit. Syndie had a mid-morning appointment at the Dept. Homeland security for her US Citizenship application. She was scheduled for a face to face review of her application as well as a English language proficiency test and a US Civics Test. Everything went well with the review and she passed her tests with flying colors! After we were all done at the Dept. of Homeland Security we went another 10 minutes to the Renaissance Center and parked our van in a garage and set out on foot to do some exploring. Below are some highlights from our beautiful afternoon. We both commented to ourselves how nice the River Walk and Campus Martius were! So often you hear only negative things about DT Detroit but we were pleasantly surprised.

Today is my last day in California. I leave bright and early tomorrow morning. I have to be to the Sacramento airport by 5am Pacific and will be back to Detroit-Metro around 4:30pm Eastern time if all goes well and I make my connections. I really hope I do not have any problems like Syndie did when she was coming back from Florida this past February.
Today I am hanging out with Rob and Cara’s boys. I am doing laundry and trying to squeeze everything back into my suitcase. I have also helped out with a few chores by planting a landscaping shrub and going underneath their house in the crawl space to see if there was anything I could do to fix a bad air conditioning duct.
This afternoon I think I might be making one more trip out to Old Sac which is a very cool place. It is also very nostalgic because I used to go there on school trips growing up.
Last night I stayed later than I have in a very long time watching a couple of real good movies. The first was, The Boy In Striped Pajamas, and the second was the,Freedom Writers. I am eager to watch them with my family and see what type of discussions ensue.
It has been a great trip! I have seen some awesome nature/wilderness that really charged my battery plus I have been able to see a lot of old acquaintances and catch up on what has been going on.
I have posted lost of pictures on my Flickr site if any are interested.

Today and tomorrow I am up in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. I am also spending a major amount of time at Lake Tahoe.
Earlier today I went swimming in the 50 degree water of Lake Tahoe.
Staying at a very cool place right on the lake thanks to my friend Rob Lanes wife Cara. It is the Zephyr Point Presbyterian Conference Center.
Pics of today are over at my Flickr site.
